The History of the Institute

The history of the Institute, from its beginnings in the 60's to the present day, together with its most important milestones, are summarized in the following paragraphs.

The Institute began in the 60's, when Dr H. Bernt was appointed as a professor, lecturing in medical statistics (1968). From there a working group (EDV) was formed which by 1972 was a lead player in the field of medicine in the former German Democratic Republic. Its main role was to coordinate computational activities in hospitals and institutes. From this working group. in 1973, a chair for medical statistics and documentation was created and with its own research contracts, new focal points were established .

In 1984 the Institute for Medical Statistics and Documentation was established. The spheres of activity of the Institute, in addition to lecturing and student training, were to promote the development of bio-statistical methods/procedures and computer-aided documentation systems.

In 01.09.1991 Professor Bernt was given emeritus status.

The provisional management of the Institute was then taken over by bio physicist PD Dr. D Barthel.

Since 1st March 1994, Professor Markus Loeffler is the Director of the Institute for Medical Informatics, Statistics and Epidemiology (IMISE). With this appointment the reconstruction of the Institute began. Dr. Alfred Winter was appointed in 01.06.1996 as professor of Medical Informatics.

In 1999 a grant by the federal governemt of Germany (BMBF) allowed the successful creation of the Coordination Center for Clinical Studies, Leipzig (KKSL). Its scientific Director became Professor Löffler.

Two years later, in the year 2001, the successful application for a DFG grant allowed a Professor for bioinformatics to be appointed. (Professor Peter Stadler from the Mathematics and Informatics Faculty of Leipzig currently occupies the post). In addition, the Interdisciplinary Center for Bioinformatics (IZBI) was founded and Professor Löffler became its scientific Director.

Thanks to a third-party funds and publication activities, the IMISE currently ranks among one of the most successful of comparable institutes in Germany.
